The Students’ Representative Council at Heritage Christian University has launched The Heritage Woman Initiative, a targeted intervention to address menstrual health challenges and reduce stigma surrounding menstruation.

A Targeted Intervention for Menstrual Healt

Led by the Office of the Women’s Commissioner, the initiative ensures no female student must choose between her education and her health. Through the Free Pad Initiative component, sanitary products will be readily available to students during emergencies.

Deputy Women’s Commissioner Miss Lawrencia Armah highlighted the reality of period poverty, noting that limited access to sanitary products often forces students to miss lectures or withdraw from campus activities.

Menstrual Hygiene Education Led by SRC Vice President

At the launch, SRC Vice President Emmanuella Osei Ampofoa led an informative session on menstrual hygiene, guiding female students through the biological aspects of the menstrual cycle. She emphasized that proper hygiene extends beyond cleanliness to self-respect and disease prevention, including correct usage and disposal of sanitary materials.

The event also featured critical health education on cervical cancer. Students learned that while the disease poses a significant health threat, it is highly preventable through early detection, HPV vaccination, and regular Pap smears. Risk factors such as Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection, multiple sexual partners, and smoking were discussed to encourage proactive health choices.

The CEO of Crimson Liberation Hub, Mr. Michael Oppong, also addressed the students on the use of reusable sanitary pads, highlighting their affordability and health benefits. He explained that reusable pads are durable, cost-effective over time, and environmentally friendly, making them a sustainable option for menstrual care. He further emphasized that with proper use and care, reusable pads can last long and provide safe, reliable protection for users.

A Commitment to Empower Female Students

The Heritage Woman Initiative represents a commitment by student leadership to empower female students with knowledge, resources, and dignified support. Sanitary pads will remain accessible across campus to ensure every student can pursue her education without interruption.
